METRO Cash & Carry Germany successfully launches delivery service
By introducing a nationwide delivery service, METRO Cash & Carry Germany is adding one new pillar to its business model. Through this approach the company is focusing more strongly on the changing demands of its professional customers.
The fact that Germany’s leading self-service wholesaler will in future also deliver goods to its customers represents a revolutionary extension of its traditional business model. "For more than forty years the cash & carry business has been based on stationary self-service wholesale", said Harald Fraszczak, Managing Director of METRO Cash & Carry Germany. "With the nationwide delivery service we are now offering our customers an additional and unique value added. We are positioning ourselves as a partner with an extensive service portfolio". The goal is to attract new customers from the hotel, gastronomy, catering and trader sectors, which will help generate new sales and earning opportunities. At the same time the delivery option will further supplement the service for the existing top customers of METRO Cash & Carry.

Expectations exceeded
METRO Cash & Carry has invested a single-digit million euro amount to set up the delivery service. "We completed our pilot phase at the close of the year and are already in the black today. With this result we have already exceeded our targets", said Harald Fraszczak. By the end of the year METRO Cash & Carry plans to triple its delivery volume as opposed to the test phase and realise a three-digit million euro turnover. The company has already succeeded in winning over more than 3,000 new customers from the key target group of hotels, restaurants and caterers throughout the initial phase. Meanwhile, sales generated from the existing customers were also boosted significantly thanks to the delivery service.
Ordered today, delivered tomorrow
Across Germany some 250 employees are engaged in processing incoming orders and quickly getting them shipped to the customers. To this effect more than 150 trucks are made available at the 61 wholesale stores involved in the present start phase. For their orders, customers can choose from around 50,000 food and non-food items which are available in the customary Metro quality with guaranteed freshness. If you order merchandise today it will be delivered tomorrow. An even faster option offered to the customers at a small surcharge is the express service which guarantees same-day delivery. Orders can be placed by phone, fax or email to the nearest wholesale store. In future, an around-the-clock ordering service will also be set up online at www.metro24.de. The traditional customer service and the extensive assortment offered at the stationary wholesale stores of METRO Cash & Carry will remain unchanged in high quality.
More countries to adopt delivery
Apart from MCC Germany, the delivery service has already been successfully carried out in Austria, Italy, Czech Republic and Russia. Based on the existing implementations, the scheme will be shortly rolled out to other countries to serve more professional customers.
